Exploring Montanejos: Hiking the Estrechos Trail and Soaking in Nature’s Baths

Montanejos, nestled on the edge of Sierra Espadán natural park, beckons with its stunning landscapes and natural wonders. One of its hidden gems is the Montanejos Estrechos trail, a captivating route that promises breathtaking views and a unique bathing experience in its thermal springs.

The trail winds along the banks of the river, offering hikers a glimpse into the region’s natural beauty. As you traverse the path, you’ll be treated to awe-inspiring vistas, with the river on one side and towering cliffs on the other. But the real highlight lies midway through the journey – a mesmerizing “horizontal waterfall,” where water cascades from the reservoir, creating a spectacular sight against the rocky backdrop.

The area known as Montanejos Estrechos is a testament to nature’s grandeur, with the river Mijares carving its way through a gorge just 25 meters wide. Towering cliffs, some over 100 meters high, flank the river, creating a dramatic landscape that’s a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Climbing areas of international renown dot the region, drawing adventure seekers from far and wide.

For those seeking to explore this natural wonder, the “Sendero de los Estrechos” offers a well-marked trail that skirts the narrow confines of the mountains. The local circular path spans approximately 11 kilometers round trip, providing ample opportunities to immerse oneself in the beauty of the surroundings. To embark on this adventure, start at the bridge leading towards Zucaina, where the trailhead awaits.

But it’s not just the hiking trails that make Montanejos a must-visit destination. The town itself exudes charm, with its quaint streets and welcoming atmosphere. After a day of exploration, unwind by taking a dip in the natural baths, where the thermal waters promise relaxation and rejuvenation.

Whether you’re an avid hiker, nature lover, or simply seeking a retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life, Montanejos has something for everyone. So pack your bags, lace up your hiking boots, and get ready to discover the beauty of this hidden gem in the heart of Spain.
