La Santa Creu Shrine

Ermita de la Santísima Cruz, also called La Santa Creu, is located at the Mirador del Garbí, in a mountain setting of great beauty that is part of the Sierra Calderona Natural Park and from which you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views. Tables and benches have been installed in its vicinity for visitors to have rest and a picnic.
The original shrine was built in 1804 to house a great cross to protect the people from the storms (so feared for their disastrous effects on these mountains) and to commemorate a miraculous event that occurred when the cross was carried to this point on March 19, 1787: a fire broke out, and the devotees, surrounded by fire, entrusted themselves to the cross and the flames, and as the fire approached, they seemed to have surrendered to it. Subsequent disputes between the residents of Albalat dels Tarongers and Estivella led to the removal of the sacred objects from the shrine and the consequent abandonment, becoming a stable for the inhabitants of El Garbí until its absolute ruin.
This primitive shrine, which used to have a guesthouse, was open on all four sides until a reform in 1920 covered the south and north arches and new imagery was added. The current building responds to a restoration in 1993 financed by the Generalitat in which all the arches of its walls were reopened, except where the old Cross was located…. CV Shrines

Barraix Shrine

Ermita del Sagrado Corazón (Barraix) is accessed by the CV-3342 road that goes up to Garbí, diverting us towards the famous Fuente de Barraix. Once we have reached this spring, a short but steep path, with some newly made steps, takes us to the esplanade where the shrine is located, under the tops of leafy pine trees. From its location, quiet and evocative, you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view, in the heart of the Sierra Calderona.
On its door you will find the date – August 3, 1922; the year of its construction. It has always been closely linked to the neighboring Fonda de Barraix and its former owners, having become a symbol of the place where it is very loved by the residents of Estivella and hikers.
Despite preserving the cult, until very recently it was in a poor state of semi-neglect and its walls and decorations have been continually vandalized. Fortunately, the pressure of institutions, associations and individuals have managed (after many delays) that the Provincial Council, owner of the building, carried out between 2016 and 2017 the rehabilitation works of this beautiful chapel, its access and surroundings, so it could be observed again in perfect condition.
