The Hikes

Path of the Archduke
This is the most well-known of the paths that Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria had built. It was drawn up by the Archduke in 1883, the year he purchased the estate of Son Moragues in Valldemossa. The route will take you to the snow house of Son Moragues. Unlike the other old routes in the Serra, this one was not built for economic reasons, rather the Archduke simply had it built in order to enjoy the impressive landscapes of the cliffs, with the Foradada rock taking the centre stage.

The Three Thousand Loop
The three minor summits over one thousand meter on the southern side of Cuber reservoir can be hiked in a loop walk, jokingly referred to as the three thousand. It is a fairly easy hike with great views over puig Major, Cuber reservoir, the Cornadors and the mountains of Alaro to the south. The ridge trail only drops a few hundred meters between each summit so the going is not too difficult. Those using public transport to reach the start of the walk at cuber reservoir are much better off walking back to Soller via the Barranc de Biniaraix or the Portell de sa Costa, a faster and more scenic rout then completing the loop to the Cuber car park.

Miradors de s’Arxiduc
More than a hiking route it could be described as a cultural route that tours the beautiful spots of Archduke Lluís Salvador d’Habsburgo-Lorena i Borbó, a great adventurer who with his two sailing ships Nixe 1 and Nixe 2 became an explorer of the world. One will be surprised when seeing the magnificence and greatness of the whole of the trail and the state it is in. What’s more one will get to know s’Estaca and es Caló, two places which are unique owing to their own charm. The route finishes in the little valley of Sa Marina, a distant coastal town.

Sant Elm to La Trapa
The route from Sant Elm to La Trapa in Mallorca offers us one of the best views of the Island of Sa Dragonera and will delight us with one of the best sunsets on the Island. It is a fairly simple route, especially the first km where we walk between pine forests and a with a very gradual ascent.

Valldemossa

A village steeped in old-world charm, Valldemossa lies in an idyllic valley in the midst of the Tramuntana mountains. Its ancient blonde stone houses contrast vividly against the surrounding green forests of olive, oak and almond trees, and the blue sky above.
With a population of around 2,000 people, Valldemossa’s quiet and picturesque streets are sprinkled with shops, art galleries, cafes and restaurants. Doorways are lined with beautiful plants and flowers, and many houses feature a portrait of Saint Catalina Thomàs, the first saint to be born in Mallorca.
The natural beauty of the countryside makes Valldemossa a popular place for hikers and nature lovers to base themselves. There is a myriad of trails that wind their way up through the wooded hillsides before reaching the summits where hikers are rewarded with panoramic views over Mallorca and the Mediterranean. It’s also a favourite destination for those looking to escape the more touristy beach resorts on the island in favour of a tranquil holiday.

Other Attractions

Port de Soller
Port de Soller is a picturesque little village situated in a large horseshoe bay on the west coast of Mallorca. The seaside retreat was, until recently, one of the island’s best-kept secrets. Its isolated location at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana meant that, before the Soller tunnel opened in the 1990s, it was a difficult place to get to. As a result, unlike many other seaside destinations on the island which were subject to some overdevelopment in the 70s and 80s, Port de Soller came through this era unscathed. The traditional charm remains firmly intact and has helped create a more sophisticated holiday destination. Surrounded by the Tramuntana mountains, Port de Soller is one of the few towns that can claim both magnificent mountain scenery and breathtaking sea views on the island. Being on the west coast, it also affords some of the best sunsets in Mallorca.

Deia
Deia is an idyllic village of green-shuttered, honey-coloured houses that has become a millionaires’ hideaway in the shadow of the Teix mountain, part of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range. Although it could have been just another pretty Mallorcan village in the west of Mallorca had Robert Graves not decided to make it his home… The English poet and novelist first moved here in 1932 with his mistress Laura Riding and returned in 1946 with his second wife. Muses followed, friends came to stay and, before long, Deia had established a reputation as a foreign artists’ colony. However, Graves was hardly the first to discover Deià, an 1878 guidebook noted its “collection of strange and eccentric foreigners” and it has stayed that way ever since.
Being a part of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, awarded World Heritage Site status, means that Deia is surrounded by some of Mallorca’s finest landscapes. There is a relaxed vibe here but, at the same time, it is a popular place for cycling and hiking enthusiasts to base themselves.
