Vilafamés – the artist village | National Geographic
There was a time, not too long ago, when numerous Spanish artists from different disciplines met in this town in the Plana Alta, attracted by the beauty of its historic center and its surroundings. They arrived in Vilafamés in a first attempt by the Valencian art critic Vicente Aguilera Cerni to create a museum of contemporary art in the town of his uncle.
All of the art is concentrated in the historic quarter of this charming town in the Plana Alta which, surrounded by a 14th-century wall, was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2005. It is one of the most important historic-artistic ensembles in the Community Valenciana, for its great beauty and high degree of conservation, as well as for the landscape enclave where it is located, which integrates with its particular silhouette. It has a medieval layout adapted to the topography, where an interesting popular architecture coexists alongside buildings of civil and religious, Gothic and Baroque architecture.

One of the most impressive natural sights around Vilafamés are ‘Las Roques de Mallasén’ rock formations. In the vegetation of the area, forested masses of Rodeno pine (Pinus pinaster) and an important undergrowth formed by Kermes oak, palm hearts and other shrub species predominate. In addition to its undoubted natural value, this area acquires great archaeological importance due to the existence of pictorial cave manifestations in one of the shelters facing west, where in 1964 the representation of a human figure in a schematic style was located, made by means of thick colored lines. reddish, and well preserved in its upper half.
