Alcalá River Canyon

8th of October

Let’s go to Alcalá de la Selva and enjoy the Autumn colours, walking along the canyon made by Alcalá river. The Gúdar-Javalambre region is one of the best spots to see the change of seasons while hiking in beautiful scenery.

Beautiful circular route, which runs along the Alcalá River canyon with its crystal-clear waters, between the towns of Cabra de Mora and Alcalá de la Selva. Along the route we can enjoy large areas of trees (scots and black pines, which coexist with junipers and some other specimens of poplars and holm oaks). If we are lucky, it is also possible to spot an otter, like the one we were able to photograph during our route. The journey does not present great difficulties, although it must be borne in mind that, in the rainy season and when the river goes down with a lot of water, it is possible that we have to take off our shoes or wear shoes that allow us to cross the river without complications. The views from the Mirador el Castillo, next to an abandoned farmhouse, are to be enjoyed quietly and a good point to recharge your batteries.

Alcalá de la Selva

The name of the town takes us back to its Muslim past, to which are added the vestiges of these possessors present on the walls of the castle. After being a defensive bastion, the fortress became the residence of the Fernández de Heredia family, but the civil wars of the 19th century returned it to its initial use. Under the protection of the castle a town grows where every corner attracts the attention it deserves, among them: the church, the sanctuary, the hermitage, the shrine and the laundry. The surroundings do not leave you indifferent, as they invite you to spend a day in the open air where you can live to the rhythm of the sport that we propose: mountain biking, road biking, hiking, skiing or golf, these are some of the proposals that the surroundings of Alcalá offer us. de la Selva and its neighborhood of the Virgen de la Vega. On the other hand, the folklore of the town preserves its own dance that is danced in September to the Virgen de la Vega.
