Ascent to Penyagolosa

30th of September

The epic hike of this month is the ascent to Penyagolosa – the most stunning peak in the entire Valencian Community. We will hike up to 1818 meters above sea level and get to observe the whole Valencian coast from the top.

Penyagolosa is the most famous peak of the region for a good reason. On clear days you can see it from almost the entire coast of Castellón province, as the peak dominates the surrounding area. The hike starts from the village of Vistabella del Maestrazgo, about 2 hours of driving from Valencia.

Once in Vistabella, we will stop for a coffee before starting the hike. after that, we will need to drive some 10 more minutes, as the trail head is located at Sant Joan de Penyagolosa monastery. We will take the path through Barranc Oscur to make our way up. This path is not widely known, which will allow us to enjoy the tranquillity of this remote area. At the same time, the path is scenic, as it will take us through the green pine forests.

After about 1.5 hours of hiking we will get to the traditional path that leads to the very peak of Penyagolosa. The views from the top are as stunning as it gets. You will get to see for dozens of miles in each direction. On clear days it is possible to see 5 different provinces: Castellón to the East, Valencia and Alicante more to the South, Teruel to the West and Tarragona to the North. The summit actually consists of two peaks next to each other, and it is possible to walk back and forth between them.

The way back done will first take us along the same path we took to get to the peak. Later we will continue through Barranco de la Pegunta. This is another beautiful ravine, that follows the flow of a little creek. Here we will be transported from the rugged and rocky mountain terrain to the lush green forests. A dramatic change and a great way to finish the epic hike! Finally, we will stop in Vistabella to have a post-hike drink and then head back to Valencia.
