A hike through one of the most picturesque parts of Pyrenees – the Aigüestortes National Park. We will walk from hut to hut along the Carros de Foc trail for 7 days.

Note that at night we are staying in mountain huts. The huts provide showers with hot water, meals and blankets. The rooms are bunk bed type, sharing the room with other hikers.
The Surroundings

The Trail
Carros de Foc is the name given to the most emblematic mountain crossing in the Aigües Tortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, located in the heart of the Lleida Pyrenees. It is a circular thru-hike with an approximate length of 55 kilometers and the elevation gain of about 4,600 meters. It was baptized with the curious name of Carros de Foc. It is not very well known why exactly…. At the end of the eighties some of the guards of the shelters in the area, ventured to make the crossing between the different shelters in the same day. With those first crossings, the guards only intended to visit other companions, but over the years the route gained popularity and was opened to the general public. It is currently one of the most popular mountain trails in Spain and attracts many national and foreign visitors year after year.

Mountain Huts
Refugi Ventosa i Calvell
The old hut was deteriorating as years went by and the access to it became dangerous. In 1976, the Centre Excursionista de Catalunya decided to commemorate their Centenary building a new hut that they called J. Ventosa i Calvell. That year the designing plans were done and on July 21st the contract to demolish the old hut –it took place between August and September- was signed. All these changes required the installation of an annex module, the materials used and the construction system are fully adapted to technological advances and are an example of sustainability.
Refugi Colomina
Refugi (Mountain Hut) Colomina, at the upper end of the Vall Fosca (Pallars Jussà), at 2400 m. of elevation, was built around 1917. In former times it was well-known as “chalet Keller”, the name of the swiss engineer who inhabited it while he designed the first hydraulic-electrical system of the Spanish state. The hut is located at the south boundary of the Encantats-Pallars-Aran range and in the peripherical zone of the national park “Parc Nacional d’Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici”. It is surrounded by 24 mountain lakes in the largest lake area of the Catalan Pyrenees. It offers lodging and food to the outdoor enthusiast after a long active day, in summer as in winter.

The price of the trip is 785 Euros per person (185 euros paid in advance to reserve the spot), with transportation from Valencia. The price includes accommodation in mountain huts (meals included) and one night in a hotel, insurance and a professional guide.
