1st – 7th of August
One of the most beautiful natural areas in Spain, Picos de Europa is a delight for hikers of all levels. We will spend a week hiking in those mountains and even get a chance to step on the Cantabrian coast. Our stay will be in Potes, voted the best touristic village in Spain last year.
The Plan (more details below):
• 01/08: Transfer from Valencia to Potes
• 02/08: Desfiladero de la Hermida (12.9km with 600m elevation gain)
• 03/08: Under the Peaks (10.9km with 520m elevation gain)
• 04/08: Exploring coastal town of Llanes (rest day)
• 05/08: Pico Gilbo (11.1km with 670m elevation gain)
• 06/08: Horcados Rojos (12km with 500m elevation gain)
• 07/08: Return to Valencia
Note that the hikes in this trip are accessible to most people with some hiking experience. There two more difficult paths to peaks of Horcados Rojos and Gilbo, but they are located near the top and can be skipped (we go up and down along the same path to reach those). If you are interested in more technical hikes and a trekking type of a trip, hiking with all the gear from place to place, I would be happy to adjust the itinerary (it is still possible to change it while it’s early). The area around Bulnes would be particularly great for that.

Desfiladero de la Hermida
This hike offers splendid views of one of the most impressive canyons of Picos de Europa – Desfildero de la Hermida. The circular route will take us through some lush green vegetation all the way up to Mirador de Santa Catalina – a lookout point with the best views of the canyon. During the descent we will also pass by the village of Cicera, joining the Camino Lebaniego (variation of Camino de Santiago) for a bit. We will make our descent along the fluvial trail, with multiple waterfalls along the way.
Under the Peaks (Mogrovejo)
This day we are going to take it easier and do the route through the municipality of Camaleño in the town of Mogrovejo, Valle or region of Liébana, named the best town of Cantabria in 2017. The route is called Bajo los Picos de Europa because it skirts through oak forest under the Picos de Europa on its slope of the Massif Oriental. In this autumn time, highlight the fallen leaves and the views of the rocky mountains above, partially covered with snow.

This day will be quite different to the rest of the trip as we will take a rest and drive to the coast to explore Llanes. The town, both historic centre and fishing port, has a large number of places of interest. Among these are such outstanding features as the Old Quarter, declared an artistic and historic complex; the Port, with the work of art The Cubes of Memory; the beautiful Houses of Indianos; as well as beautiful beaches.
Llanes also has some superb walks which combine its beautiful scenery and historic interest. The Paseo de San Pedro, which dates from 1847, is a stunning cliff top walk from which the whole town, the mountains and the entire coastal area can be seen together, offering a breathtaking panorama.

The Gilbo Peak is the most striking, beautiful and visited of the Riaño mountains. Its pointy and highly characteristic silhouette rises 600m above the waters of the Riaño reservoir, reminiscing Matterhorn, better known as Cervino. Of course, in this corner of Cantabrian mountains we can find much higher peaks, which exceed 2000m in altitude. However, few of them can compete in beauty with Gilbo. Regarding the shape, it is a pyramidal limestone massif that has spectacular views. Despite its modest height, at least if we compare it with the nearby peaks, it is considered one of the most beautiful ascents in the province of León, and with good reason. A route that allows you to enjoy beautiful beech forests and fjords above the swamp, with dizzying slopes and wonderful panoramic views in all directions.
The best hike in Picos de Europa accessible to general public! After taking the cable car from Fuente De, you will get a chance to walk through the clouds, starting the hike from 1800 meter altitude. The hike is lineal, but the views are magnificent throughout the itinerary. The ascent is also very gradual and takes you up to the mountain pass at 2300 meters in over 5 kilometers. Here it is possible to do the optional steep ascent to the peak of Horcados Rojos or just relax and enjoy the views of Naranjo de Bulnes at the other side of the mountain pass. Truly spectacular hike!
