Peña Foratata

The hike to Peña Foratata from Formigal is a demanding yet rewarding alpine route that begins near the Formigal resort and ascends through meadows and karst terrain to the Forato col, where the steepest section begins. The route covers around 4 km with approximately 700 m of elevation gain, combining a clear trail with short scrambles and exposed stretches. The summit, at 2,321 m, offers stunning panoramic views of the Tena Valley, the Lanuza and Sallent reservoirs, and the surrounding Pyrenean peaks. Known for its distinctive pierced limestone shape, Peña Foratata is not the highest peak in the area, but it is certainly one of the most striking. The entire hike typically takes between 4 and 5 hours and is best suited for experienced hikers in good physical condition.

Ibones de Anayet

The hike to the Ibones de Anayet is a captivating trek through high‑mountain landscapes in the Aragonese Pyrenees. Starting from either the Portalet ski station or the small Corral de las Mulas parking near Formigal, the route climbs gently through meadows and wildflower‑lined streams before steepening on the approach to the glacial‑origin lakes nestled beneath Pico Anayet (2,545 m). Sitting at around 2,233 m, these scenic ibones offer awe‑inspiring reflections of the jagged Midi d’Ossau and surrounding peaks, earning praise as “one of the most breathtaking routes in Sallent de Gállego”. The round‑trip is typically 10–13 km with about 600 m of elevation gain, taking 4–5 hours depending on your pace, and the trail is well‑marked and accessible to those in good physical shape – with a couple of steep but straightforward segments.

Refugio Respomuso

The hike to Refugio Respomuso is a classic and cherished route in the Valle de Tena, leading hikers along the Rio Aguas Limpias before ascending through alpine meadows and rocky terrain to the scenic Embalse de Respomuso and the 2,200 m refuge nestled in the Piedrafita cirque. The well-marked GR‑11 trail covers around 16 km out‑and‑back with roughly 850 m of elevation gain, typically taking 6–8 hours, although fitter hikers often complete it in 4–6 hours. The refuge, built in 1993 and accommodating over 100 guests, offers dorms, hot meals, showers, and serves as a base for ascents to peaks like Balaitús, Tebarray, or Gran Facha. Whether as a day trip or overnight stay, the journey rewards with dramatic cirque views, tranquil reservoir reflections, and easy access to further high-mountain adventures.

Ibones de Bachimaña

The hike to the Ibones de Bachimaña, starting from the Balneario de Panticosa, is a breathtaking alpine adventure in the heart of the Aragonese Pyrenees. The well-marked GR‑11 trail stretches roughly 12–13 km round-trip with about 800–880 m of elevation gain, taking around 5–6 hours. You follow the Caldarés River through verdant pine forests and rocky cascades before arriving at the Ibón Bajo de Bachimaña (2,190 m), then continue upward to the stunning Ibón Alto, nestled beneath stark granite cliffs. Along the way stands the modern Refugio de los Ibones de Bachimaña—at an altitude of around 2,200 m and with capacity for ~80 guests, it provides hot meals, showers, electricity, and serves as a convenient base for further ascents. The twin lakes, reflecting towering peaks and cliffs, create an incredibly serene Alpine setting—perfect for a day hike or an overnight stop on a longer trek.
