Weekend in Peñiscola

November 23-24

Peniscola is one of the most beautiful coastal towns in Spain and recently has been used for filming Game of Thrones. It also makes a great base to do some walking.

Saturday: Desierto de las Palmas

On the first day we will stop for a hike in Desierto de las Palmas on our way to Peñiscola. There’s a great and easy route with spectacular views of Mediterranean sea on one side and mountainous area crowned by Penyagolosa on the other.
You will need to bring your own lunch on the first day but we will eat out for dinner in Peniscola in the evening.
The name of desert is the term with which Carmelitas Descalzas designate those lonely and remote places, to which they retire to devote themselves to contemplation and prayer. Since there were many palm trees (Chamaerops humillis) in the area, the park was renamed Desert de les Palmes. The lands of the Desert de les Palmes have been populated since the Neolithic, although its history really begins with the arrival of the Carmelite fathers.

Sunday: Peñiscola + Sierra de Irta

On the second day we willl look round Peniscola in the morning then do a shorter walk in the nearby Sierra de Irta before we return to Valencia.
Peñíscola, on the Costa del Azahar (Castellón), is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. Its old town, which enters the Mediterranean Sea forming a small peninsula, rises to 65m around the historic Papa Luna Castle.

What to see in Peñiscola: apuntesviajero.com

The Natural Park of the Sierra de Irta represents one of the last coastal mountain ranges that remain unbuilt on the Mediterranean coast. Located north of the province of Castellón, the Sierra de Irta occupies an area of almost 8,000 hectares of unaltered nature and steep slopes that form small coves in its gentle descent to the sea. A dream area, relatively unknown, which constitutes one of the most beautiful natural areas of the Valencian coast.
