15 – 16 of February
It is not a difficult walk technically however you will need proper walking boots not trainers, there could be some snow on the ground and of course warm clothing it goes below 0 degrees in the evening. On the first day we will do a walk, probably in desierto de las palmas and we will do Penyagolossa on the morning of the second day.
The Penyagolosa peak, 1,813 meters above sea level, rises magnificently over the southern half of the province of Castellón. In all the Valencian Community, only Cerro Calderón (1,837 meters and located in the Rincón de Ademúz) exceeds it. But the imposing Penyagolosa has a special place in the hearts of generations of mountaineers and hikers who started their great adventures here, as it happened long time ago to the population of different villages that surround it, since even today they make a yearly pilgrimage to its sublime sanctuary.
With 300 meter high vertical wall, its spectacular south face rises majestically towards large towns of Castellón coast, from where it seems unattainable, although tempting for climbers. Its cool northern slope is not as steep – a gift for the senses of all those hikers who consider ascending the Peña Colosal, already mentioned by the illustrious traveler and botanist Cavanilles at the end of the 18th century.
Desierto de las Palmas
The “desert” is the term with which carmelitas descalzos designate for those lonely and remote places, to which they retire to devote themselves to contemplation and prayer. Since there were many palm trees (Chamaerops humillis) in the area, the park was named Desert de les Palmes. The lands of the Desert de les Palmes have been populated since the Neolithic, although its history really begins with the arrival of the Carmelite fathers.
From the highest peaks, the Mola del Morico of 694 meters and the Bartolo of 729, the visitor can enjoy the wonderful perspectives of the coast that its two peaks offer. The climate of the park is characterized by being clearly Mediterranean, but its proximity to the sea gives it special climatic characteristics due to the winds from the east that, loaded with humidity, cause fogs allowing the formation of more humid microclimates.
The accommodation is in Hostal El Pairon. Set in Puertomingalvo, Hostal El Pairon features a bar, a garden, a terrace, and free WiFi throughout the property. At the guest house rooms have a private bathroom.
