Top Ten Hikes of Los Serranos

Top Ten Hikes of Los Serranos, the region that hides some of the best routes in Valencian Community. Most of the hikes go through fluvial landscapes of the main river in Valencia – Turia.

1. Hanging Bridges of Chulilla

Chulilla is one of the most visited villages in the province of Valencia. This is mostly due to the impressive hiking trail along the Turia river called Ruta de Los Calderones. An excursion that will make you feel tiny, walking between the canyon walls. You will follow the Turia river for most of the route. Fell the direct contact with one of the most characteristic places in the Valencian Community.

2. Peña Cortada Aqueduct

One of the main attractions of Alto Turia region – Roman aqueduct Peña Cortada in Chelva. It dates more than 2000 years back, and is still accessible on foot nowadays. The aqueduct gives you the opportunity to walk through tunnels carved in rock, cross impressive bridges, and admire unique scenery of the area. Chelva itself and its historical neighborhoods deserves a visit as well. Take a more relaxed stroll through the town, admiring the old Moorish, Jewish, Christian and Arabic constructions.

3. Medieval Route of Andilla

Andilla’s medieval route will take you to various historical spots from ancient times: a Roman road, an Arabic aqueduct, Christian crosses at the village’s entrances… Several cultures and religions mix in Andilla. The village is also the greenest place in Valencia. April and May are great times to visit it, as the hike will be colored in many different Spring tones.

Difficulty: easy (6.5km with 150m elevation gain)
Technical level: medium/low (a creek needs to be crossed once)

4. Alpuente

A great hike at the border of Alto Turia region. Surprisingly, this route is not very well known, but it deserves to be. Apart from a great circular route, the village of Alpuente has a spectacular gorge with a waterfall. Let’s not forget the imposing castle as well, sitting right on top of the town.

Difficulty: medium (10km with 350m elevation gain)

5. Barranco de Regajo

The ravine of the Regajo is one of the tributary ravines of the Turia river. This Valencian river that is born in Teruel and goes through Los Serranos to the city of Valencia. The path runs mostly along the riverbed. You will see how the water passes on stone steps, forming waterfalls and some small pools. The circular route offers not only mountainous landscapes, but also a cool spot to walk in summer, as the riverbed stays chill for much longer.

Difficulty: medium/low (11.5km with 200m of elevation gain)

6. El Azud of Tuéjar

El Azud in Tuéjar becomes the most colourful spot in Valencia in Autumn, as the leaves of deciduous trees change their colour. That being said, it is well worth a visit at any time of year, as the easy route takes you to the headwaters of the Tuéjar river. On top of that, you can even get a great panoramic views from Mirador del Mediodía.

7. Benageber Reservoir

The municipality of Benagéber stands out for the great attraction of its natural heritage, whose term is located on either side of the Turia River. Fountains, bridges, pine forests, mountains and ravines form beautiful corners that you can discover on a route that starts from the Benagéber reservoir and leads you through very curious spots.

8. El Morron (Sot de Chera)

Sot de Chera has been named the most flowerful village of la Serranía region. Indeed so, it’s streets are filled with colourful flowers. The easy hike takes you the top of el Morron, with a lookout point right above the village. You will also discover very impressive geological rock formations, such us Anticlinal.

9. Peña María (Gestalgar)

Gestalgar has many charms that make it worth visiting, but there is one that gets the most attention for its exceptional beauty – Peña María peak, easily accessed by a forest trail. The impressive massif also presides over a beautiful bathing area, that will delight both people seeking refreshment in summer and enthusiastic photographers.

10. GR-37 – Serranía del Turia

The GR 37 – Serranía del Turia trail runs along the limits of the province of Valencia. It passes through towns like Aras de los Olmos, Titaguas, Alpuente and Yesa, along a circular itinerary. It is the only long distance trail that runs entirely within the region of Los Serranos. Most of the route goes along the old transhumance roads. Certainly, a great adventure for multiple day hiking enthusiasts.
