Cazorla
Cazorla, a picturesque town in the province of Jaén, Andalusia, serves as the gateway to the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, the largest protected area in Spain. Perched on a hillside beneath the imposing Yedra Castle, the town boasts a rich history influenced by Moorish and Christian cultures. Its charming old town is filled with narrow, winding streets, whitewashed houses, and historic landmarks such as the ruins of Santa María Church, which was built over the Cerezuelo River. Cazorla is a popular destination for nature lovers, offering access to stunning landscapes of rugged mountains, deep gorges, and lush forests teeming with wildlife. Outdoor activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and exploring waterfalls make it an ideal base for adventurers looking to experience the beauty of Andalusia’s wild interior.
Ruta del Río Borosa
Nacimiento del Río Borosa hike is one of the most spectacular routes in the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, offering a journey through dramatic gorges, crystal-clear pools, and cascading waterfalls. The trail follows the Borosa River, a tributary of the Guadalquivir, winding through lush forests and limestone cliffs. One of the highlights is the Cerrada de Elías, a narrow gorge with wooden walkways suspended above the rushing river. As the trail ascends, hikers reach the Laguna de Valdeazores and the Nacimiento del Borosa, where water emerges from a cave in the Aguas Negras reservoir, creating an awe-inspiring natural spectacle. With its breathtaking scenery and diverse wildlife, this moderately challenging route is one of the best ways to experience the wild beauty of Andalusia.
El Gilillo Peak

El Gilillo is the highest peak in the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, rising to 1,847 meters and offering one of the best panoramic views in the region. The hike to the summit typically starts from Cazorla, following a well-marked but demanding trail that winds through lush pine forests, rocky slopes, and open meadows. Along the way, hikers can enjoy spectacular views of the Guadalquivir Valley, the surrounding mountain ranges, and even, on clear days, the distant peaks of Sierra Nevada. The final ascent is steep but rewarding, with breathtaking 360-degree vistas from the summit. Due to its accessibility from Cazorla and its stunning scenery, El Gilillo is one of the most popular high-altitude hikes in the park.
Sierra de Castril
Sierra de Castril is a stunning mountain range in the province of Granada, forming part of the Baetic System and characterized by dramatic limestone landscapes, deep gorges, and crystal-clear rivers. Protected as the Sierra de Castril Natural Park, it offers a pristine environment rich in biodiversity, home to griffon vultures, Spanish ibex, and golden eagles. One of its most iconic features is the Castril River, which carves through the mountains, creating breathtaking canyons and waterfalls. Popular hiking routes include the Cerrada del Río Castril, a scenic walk along wooden footbridges suspended above the river, and the Pico del Buitre, a challenging summit hike with panoramic views. With its rugged beauty and diverse ecosystems, Sierra de Castril is a paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
