The Ayous Lakes, or Les Lacs d’Ayous, are a breathtaking series of mountain lakes nestled in the French Pyrenees near the Spanish border. Known for their crystal-clear waters and dramatic alpine backdrop, the lakes are a prime destination for hikers and nature lovers. The lakes are part of a popular hiking loop that begins in the town of Gabas and leads trekkers through a scenic trail with unforgettable views, including the iconic Pic du Midi d’Ossau, a rugged peak that reflects beautifully in the lake’s waters. The route, though challenging in places, rewards hikers with a tranquil yet dramatic landscape dotted with serene lakes, rolling meadows, and diverse wildlife.
Chemin de la Mature
Chemin de la Mature is a thrilling, historic trail carved directly into a steep cliffside in the French Pyrenees, offering hikers both breathtaking views and a sense of adventure. Originally built in the 18th century to transport timber needed for naval shipbuilding, this narrow path stretches over 1,200 feet above the Gorges d’Enfer. The trail, only a few meters wide, winds along the cliff’s edge, providing panoramic views of the gorge and surrounding mountains. While it’s not overly technical, the Chemin de la Mature requires a steady foot and a good head for heights, making it popular among seasoned hikers. The combination of its rich history, dramatic setting, and unique construction makes it one of the most memorable hikes in the Pyrenees, perfect for those seeking both nature and a touch of history.

Known for its dramatic, rugged beauty, this area is a popular destination for hikers and mountaineers alike. The trek to the Oulettes de Gaube starts from the famous Lac de Gaube, whose turquoise waters reflect the surrounding peaks and pine forests. From here, the trail leads hikers up through alpine meadows and past cascading waterfalls until they reach the cirque itself, where stunning views of the Vignemale massif’s glacier-clad slopes await. The setting is truly magnificent, with the glacier hanging high above the valley and the imposing rock faces making for an unforgettable backdrop.

Shaped by millions of years of glacial activity, this UNESCO World Heritage site features walls that rise over 1,500 meters, creating a dramatic setting that captivates visitors. The cirque is famous for the Gavarnie Falls, one of Europe’s tallest waterfalls, plunging nearly 423 meters down into the valley below. The walk to the base of the cirque is accessible, making it a popular hike for families and casual walkers who want to experience the majesty of the mountains without a strenuous trek. Along the way, hikers are treated to scenic views, lush meadows, and forests, with the ever-present sound of rushing water adding to the atmosphere.
