Camino de la Tossa

The route starts at Herbers Square, goes down Calle del Sol and Costa Roja, then ascends through the steep path of Pinar del Valle, which leads us to Balsa de la Cruz. We continue on to Les Fossetes, a traditional place of prayer, and reach Peiró de Santo Macari and Santa Elena, popularly known as La Tossa and used as a place of prayer. From here, we ascend towards the Hole Caves and the geodesic vertex of Cogulla mountain, from where we can enjoy excellent panoramic views of the Herbers area. Then, the route descends along the old path to Torre de Arques, passing by the Cardona fountain, which supplies the village, and continuing on the same path until reaching Herbers.

Peñas de Masmut

The rocks of Masmut are one of the symbols of Peñarroya de Tastavins, and a source of countless references, poems, and legends. It is an impressive monolith with vertical walls over a hundred meters high, with different shapes and perspectives on the northern and southern faces. Its altitude is at 1058 meters. It was formed in the Paleogene period with the initial eroded materials of the mountain massif, composed of conglomerates, sandstones, and clays.

Its name could derive from the toponym ‘Masmuda’, a Berber tribe from Morocco that would have been settled in this territory during the Arab occupation.

The route is circular, encircling the rocky massif of the Peñas del Masmut. The starting point is on Sol Street, which begins at the Church square. It starts along the Vallibona path, where every seven years the pilgrimage from the aforementioned town of Castellón arrives. It crosses an area of small rock-hewn shelters and constructions that were used for various livestock. A short distance away, there is a left turn leading to the ‘Aragonese Park of Rural Housing’, featuring recreations of various past constructions.

Herbers

Herbers is a town in the northeast of Valencia. Its municipal area offers an astonishing landscape, which includes the mountains of Tossa, La Roca Mola, El Botadó or La Costa del Ginebra, with spectacular views of the valley and the surroundings of the town. It has deep slopes in the terrain, ranging from 750 meters in the village to 1236 meters. The town lays on the foot of a hill, where we can enjoy the majestic palace of el Baró d’Herbers. From the 14th century, this is a restored building with all the rooms of a feudal castle with beautiful Gothic windows.

A walk through Herbers means enjoying its small medieval streets and traditional stone architecture. It means plunging into a land from another era that still retains some traditional crafts such as the distillation of aiguardent, a typical high-quality liquor.
