Let’s tackle the “roof” of Valencian Community – Alto de la Barracas (or Cerro Calderón). This two-day hike will take us from Puebla de San Miguel to the peak, where we’ll spend the night in a shelter before descending back to the village the next day.

Difficulty: medium/high (11km with 970m elevation gain on the first day, descent along a different path the following day)
Technical level: medium (single track trails)
Meeting point: Mestalla, parking lot on av. Aragón, 14:00 (return to Valencia on Sunday ~15:00)

Alto de las Barracas
Alto de las Barracas (or Cerro Calderón) is the highest peak in the Valencian Community, located in the Sierra de Javalambre within the municipality of Puebla de San Miguel, Valencia. Standing at 1,837 meters above sea level, it is a prominent feature of the rugged landscape, offering panoramic views of the surrounding areas. The peak is part of a protected natural park, which preserves the rich biodiversity of the region, including Mediterranean forests, diverse flora, and various species of wildlife. Hiking to the summit is a popular activity, attracting nature enthusiasts and adventurers who seek to experience the pristine environment and enjoy the tranquility of the mountainous terrain.
Collado del Buey Shelter
Refugio del Collado del Buey sits proudly in the municipality of Puebla de San Miguel in Rincón de Ademúz (Valencia) on the very mountain pass from which it takes its name. It is conveniently positioned next to a forest track accessible from Puebla de San Miguel or from Camarena de la Sierra via the Matahombres road. Strategically located in the midst of the Camarena – Javalambre – Calderón – Camarena crossing, it is the perfect spot for an overnight stay when completing this two-day itinerary.
