NY on Gran Canaria

December 28 – January 3

Beyond the bustling beach resorts of Gran Canaria lies a sprawling network of historic footpaths, known as caminos reales, that reveal why the island is widely celebrated as a miniature continent. Trekking inland rewards you with an ever-changing environment, where arid, desert-like ravines in the south rapidly give way to dense Canary Island pine forests, terraced agricultural valleys, and misty volcanic ridges in the central highlands. Iconic routes guide adventurers upward to striking geological wonders like the massive Roque Nublo monolith and the panoramic heights of Pico de las Nieves, offering sweeping vistas across the Atlantic toward neighboring Tenerife. Whether navigating the rugged depths of the Guayadeque caldera or wandering through the fertile oasis of Barranco de los Cernícalos where water flows year-round, exploring this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on foot provides an intimate, unhurried connection to the island’s authentic natural heritage.

December 27 – Roque Nublo

Hike details: Distance 6.6km, Elevation gain 275m

This is the quintessential trek on the island, guiding you up to the iconic 67-meter basalt monolith that served as a sacred site for the indigenous inhabitants. Starting from the Degollada de la Goleta mountain pass, the trail winds upward through pine terrain before opening up onto a vast, wind-swept plateau. Standing at the base of the massive crag rewards you with 360-degree vistas across the volcanic Tejeda basin, and on clear days, you can spot the distinctive peak of Mount Teide on neighboring Tenerife.

December 28 – Valle de Agaete

Hike details: Distance 11.5km, Elevation gain 510m

The ascent from the verdant depths of the Agaete Valley up to the high ridges of Tamadaba is one of the most rewarding mountain journeys on Gran Canaria. Starting amidst the subtropical fruit orchards, coffee plantations, and traditional white-walled hamlets of the valley floor, the trail quickly gains altitude as it tackles the ancient, wind-swept stone paths traversing the massif. Along the steady climb, you pass the ancestral cave dwellings of Cuevas de Berbique, a remarkable testament to the island’s pre-Hispanic history carved directly into the volcanic tuff. As the arid lower slopes transition into the cool, fragrant canopy of the native pine forest at the summit plateau, the terrain opens up to deliver sweeping vistas of the rugged northwest coast and the vast Atlantic Ocean stretching toward the horizon.

December 29 – Barranco de Las Vacas

Hike details: Distance 8.6 km, Elevation gain 330 m

Tucking into the sun-baked ravines of the southeast, the hike through Barranco de las Vacas offers a journey into a landscape heavily sculpted by flash floods and volcanic history. Setting out along the ancient network of paths from the historic town of Agüimes, the trail navigates a rugged, arid environment of desert-like scrub and steep canyon walls. The true highlight of the route is the striking Tobas de Colores, a narrow, wind-swept slot canyon where water and time have smoothed the volcanic tuff into undulating, multicolored wave patterns that glow with rich ochre and red tones when the sun hits the rock faces. This unique geological formation, combined with the quiet isolation of the surrounding dry riverbeds, makes the hike an incredible look at the raw, erosive forces that continue to shape the island’s coastal slopes.

December 30 – Pico de las Nieves

Hike details: Distance 7,35 km, Elevation gain 388 m

As the highest crest on Gran Canaria, trekking toward Pico de las Nieves places you at the literal crown of the island, where the sweeping panoramic views stretch across the entire volcanic archipelago. Setting out from the high mountain passes like Degollada de la Goleta or Cruz de Tejeda, the trails wind upward through a serene landscape of resilient Canary Island pine forests, rugged volcanic ridges, and high-altitude broom shrubbery. The final approach brings you to an elevation of 1,949 meters, where the terrain opens up to reveal a dramatic landscape of deep ravines, the nearby basalt monolith of Roque Nublo, and, on clear days, the snow-capped peak of Mount Teide floating above a sea of clouds on neighboring Tenerife. This high-altitude trek beautifully showcases the island’s central massif, providing an invigorating journey above the mist that highlights the true scale of Gran Canaria’s volcanic origins.

December 31 – Barranco de los Cernícalos

Hike details: Distance 7 km, Elevation gain 300 m

Highlighting the island’s environmental diversity, this route explores a lush, hidden oasis where water flows through the stream bed year-round. Located near Telde, the gentle path leads you through a vibrant riparian corridor filled with native willows, wild olive trees, and dense clusters of reeds. The trail gradually climbs deeper into the ravine, culminating in a series of small, cascading waterfalls that offer a cooling escape from the drier coastal temperatures.

January 1 – Caldera de Bandama

Hike details: Distance 8.2 km, Elevation gain 250 m

Situated near the capital, this trail traces the narrow rim of a massive volcanic crater that stretches one kilometer wide and plummets 200 meters deep. Walking the perimeter path offers an incredible lesson in geology, with panoramic views of the entire northeast coast on one side and a bird’s-eye view of the crater’s green, sunken floor on the other. For a longer journey, a steep interior path also allows descent directly down into the caldera’s isolated microclimate.
