25th of March
This time we are going to the highest peak in Sierra Calderona – Montmayor. On the way up we will also visit the Cueva Santa sanctuary.
El Alto de Montmayor, due to its location and elevation of 1,015 m constitutes a privileged enclave at the edge of Sierra Calderona. It that allows you to simultaneously view the valleys of the Turia and Palancia rivers from a place that combines ecosystems of considerable ecological value. The Aleppo pine forest and holm oaks are the protagonists in a recovery process that progressively covers the slopes where some monumental specimens of white juniper still stand.
Santuario de la Cueva Santa
Santuario de la Cueva Santa is located in the vicinity of Montmayor. The cave, also known as “the Tinsmith”, was used as a refuge by shepherds. One of them must have left an image of the Virgin there. Years later, the Virgin appeared to another shepherd who was spending the night in the cave, who told him where he could find the image. The image of the elderly Virgin Mary in a widow’s dress that, despite the humidity in the chasm, has barely deteriorated over the years.
