Penyagolosa stands as the undisputed symbol of the region for a compelling reason. On clear days, its majestic presence commands attention, visible from nearly the entire stretch of Castellón province’s coastline. Embarking on the hike from the village of Vistabella del Maestrazgo, situated around 2 hours’ drive from Valencia, presents a memorable experience.

Once in Vistabella, we will make a quick stop for a refreshing coffee before embarking on our hike. Following this, a brief 10-minute drive will bring us to the trailhead at Sant Joan de Penyagolosa monastery. Our chosen route will lead us through Barranc Oscur, a lesser-known path that offers a serene and secluded atmosphere, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the tranquillity of this remote area. Additionally, the path promises stunning views as we journey through lush pine forests.

After approximately 1.5 hours of hiking, we will reach the traditional path leading to the peak of Penyagolosa. The panoramic views from the summit are truly breathtaking, offering vistas extending for dozens of miles in every direction. On clear days, it’s even feasible to observe five different provinces: Castellón to the East, Valencia and Alicante further to the South, Teruel to the West, and Tarragona to the North. Remarkably, the summit comprises of two adjacent peaks, allowing for a captivating stroll between them.

The journey back will retrace our steps along the same path we took to reach the summit. We will then proceed through Barranco de la Pegunta, a stunning ravine that meanders alongside a gentle creek. This transition will take us from the rugged, rocky mountain landscape to the verdant green forests, a remarkable shift and a fitting conclusion to this extraordinary hike. Our final stop in Vistabella for a post-hike refreshment will precede our return to Valencia.
