Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: April 7
After gathering in Valencia, we will set off on a 45-minute drive to the charming village of Chulilla, a place renowned for its dramatic limestone cliffs, picturesque whitewashed houses, and its famous suspension bridges. Upon arrival, we will embark on a scenic 16-kilometer hike along the Ruta de los Puentes Colgantes (Hanging Bridges Route), one of the most spectacular trails in the region.
The hike follows the course of the Turia River, leading us through a deep, rugged canyon surrounded by towering cliffs that attract rock climbers from all over the world. Along the way, we will cross two impressive suspension bridges that sway gently above the turquoise waters of the river, providing breathtaking views of the gorge below. The route also takes us past lush riverbanks, shaded sections with Mediterranean vegetation, and several panoramic viewpoints where we can pause to take in the beauty of the landscape.
After completing the hike, we will check into Hostal El Pozo, a cozy accommodation in the heart of Chulilla, where we can relax and freshen up. Later in the evening, we will gather for a well-deserved dinner at the hotel, enjoying traditional local dishes and reflecting on the day’s adventure.
Day 2: April 8
After having breakfast at Hostal El Pozo, we will set off on a drive to Chelva, a town rich in history and cultural heritage, located in the heart of the Serranía region. Known for its charming old town and well-preserved historical quarters, Chelva offers a fascinating journey through time, showcasing its blend of Andalusian, Jewish, Moorish, and Christian influences.
Upon arrival, we will take a leisurely stroll through its winding streets, visiting the distinct historical neighborhoods:
- Benacacira – The former Andalusian quarter, with its whitewashed houses, narrow alleys, and Moorish architectural remnants.
- Azoque – The old Jewish quarter, where remnants of medieval Jewish culture are still evident in the layout of the streets.
- Arrabal – A charming Mudejar-Moorish district, known for its picturesque corners and traditional houses.
- Ollerías – The former Christian neighborhood, where you can see centuries-old buildings reflecting the town’s medieval past.
After exploring Chelva, we will set off on a hike to one of the most impressive engineering feats of Roman times—the Peña Cortada Aqueduct. This historic Roman aqueduct, carved directly into the rock, was once part of a vast water transportation system supplying Valencia. The hike takes us through a mix of forested paths, rocky trails, and dramatic tunnels hewn from limestone cliffs. Along the way, we will walk through a series of man-made tunnels (bring a flashlight or headlamp for the darker sections!) before reaching the breathtaking Peña Cortada, where the rock has been spectacularly cut away to form a narrow passageway suspended high above the valley. This ancient aqueduct, with its impressive arches and rugged surroundings, stands as a testament to Roman ingenuity and offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and gorges.
Day 3: April 9
The hike to Masía Mosquera from Almedíjar is a beautiful route through the heart of the Sierra de Espadán, combining lush forest trails, red sandstone paths, and a glimpse into the region’s rural history. Starting from the picturesque village of Almedíjar, the trail climbs gently through cork oak forests and Mediterranean scrub, gradually revealing sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. The route follows well-marked tracks and paths, making its way past old terraced fields and shaded ravines typical of the Espadán landscape. Along the way, the scents of pine and aromatic herbs fill the air, adding to the immersive experience of hiking through one of Castellón’s most scenic natural parks.
After about 7 kilometers of varied terrain, the trail reaches Masía Mosquera, a historic 18th-century farmhouse nestled in a quiet valley. Once used for forestry and agricultural purposes, the masía has been partially restored and now serves as an interpretation center for the natural park. It’s an ideal spot to rest, enjoy a picnic, and take in the peaceful surroundings before retracing your steps or completing the circular route back to Almedíjar. The full loop is around 14 kilometers with moderate elevation gain, making it a satisfying half-day hike suitable for most hikers in good condition. This route is especially pleasant in spring and autumn, when the colors of the forest are at their most vibrant.
After completing the hike, we will drive to Vilafamés, a beautiful medieval village perched on a hill in the province of Castellón. Upon arrival, we will check into our accommodation, Hotel L’Antic Portal, a cozy and well-located hotel offering a comfortable stay in the heart of the village.
Day 4: April 10
After enjoying breakfast at Hotel L’Antic Portal, we will take a short drive to the Desierto de las Palmas Natural Park, a stunning protected area in the province of Castellón. Despite its name, this region is not an actual desert but rather a rugged, mountainous landscape covered in lush Mediterranean vegetation, including palm hearts, cork oaks, and aromatic shrubs. The park is also home to the ruins of a historic Carmelite monastery, which adds to the spiritual and cultural significance of the area. Our hike will take us to the summit of El Bartolo (729m), the highest peak in the natural park. The trail offers a mix of forest paths, rocky ridges, and panoramic viewpoints, making it one of the most scenic routes in the region.
After completing the hike, we will return to Vilafamés for a relaxed and well-deserved evening. You will have the opportunity to explore more of this charming medieval village, known for its well-preserved historic center and striking red sandstone cliffs. For those interested in art, a must-visit is the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Vilafamés, housed in a historic palace. This renowned contemporary art museum showcases a fascinating collection of modern paintings, sculptures, and avant-garde works, making it one of the most important cultural attractions in the region.
Alternatively, you can simply take a leisurely walk through the cobbled streets, admire the centuries-old architecture, and enjoy a peaceful evening in this picturesque hilltop town. If you’d like, you can also visit a local restaurant or café to savor traditional Castellón cuisine, with dishes featuring local ingredients such as olive oil, almonds, and fresh seafood.
Day 5: April 11
After having breakfast at Hotel L’Antic Portal, we will set off on a drive to Montanejos, a charming mountain village known for its dramatic natural surroundings and healing thermal waters. Nestled in the Alto Mijares region, Montanejos is famous for its rugged limestone cliffs, lush forests, and the crystal-clear waters of the Mijares River, making it an ideal setting for our next adventure—la Bojera hike.
This scenic circular hike takes us along the stunning Mijares River Canyon, where we will be treated to breathtaking views of towering cliffs, deep gorges, and dramatic rock formations. The trail gradually ascends through a diverse landscape of pine forests, Mediterranean scrub, and rocky outcrops, leading to several panoramic viewpoints that offer sweeping vistas of the river valley below. One of the highlights of the hike is the Cinglo de los Castillejos, a spectacular cliff face that provides a perfect vantage point for taking in the rugged beauty of the region.
After the hike, we will take some time to relax and explore Montanejos, a village renowned for its natural thermal springs. Fuente de los Baños is the most famous of these, a set of thermal pools fed by naturally heated underground waters that maintain a temperature of around 25°C year-round. According to legend, these waters were once sought after for their healing and rejuvenating properties, and even today, they attract visitors looking to unwind in their mineral-rich warmth.
Day 6: April 12
For the grand finale of our adventure, we will take on the most iconic peak of the Castellón province—Penyagolosa (1,814m), often referred to as the “roof of Castellón”.
After a filling breakfast at Hotel Rosaleda del Mijares, we will drive to the picturesque village of Vistabella del Maestrazgo, the gateway to the Penyagolosa Natural Park.
Our hike will take us through pristine pine forests, rocky trails, and panoramic ridgelines, gradually gaining elevation as we approach the highest peak in Castellón. Along the way, we will walk through the Barranco de la Pegunta, a stunning ravine known for its rich biodiversity. Reaching the summit of Penyagolosa is an unforgettable moment. From the top, we will be rewarded with a spectacular 360-degree view that extends over mountain ranges, deep valleys, and, on clear days, even as far as the Balearic Islands.
After completing our final and most majestic hike, we will return to Montanejos for a well-deserved celebration dinner to mark the end of our incredible journey. This will be a time to reflect on our adventures, share memories of the breathtaking landscapes, and enjoy a delicious meal together in the heart of this beautiful mountain town.
