6 – 7 of July
Penyagolosa, standing at 1,814 meters, is the second-highest peak in the Valencian Community and a prominent natural landmark in the region. The ascent to this majestic mountain offers hikers a challenging yet immensely rewarding experience. This time we are going to camp at the base of it and hike up in the morning.
The hike to Penyagolosa, which begins at the Sant Joan de Penyagolosa hermitage, covers approximately 11 kilometers round trip with an elevation gain of around 540 meters, typically taking 4 hours to complete. The initial segment of the trail ascends gently through a forested area filled with pine trees and dense shrubbery, providing a serene start. As the trail progresses, it becomes steeper and more rugged, with rocky, uneven terrain requiring careful navigation. The final stretch to the summit is the most challenging, involving a somewhat steep climb.
At the summit, hikers are rewarded with stunning panoramic views, including sights of the Mediterranean Sea, the distant Pyrenees, and the plains of Aragon. The descent follows the same path, demanding careful navigation of the steep and rocky sections. Throughout the hike, sturdy footwear, ample water and sun protection are recommended for a safe and enjoyable experience.
