El Garbí* from Beselga

23rd of January

* This time we’re taking a less-known route, starting from Beselga and going through the greenest and densest trails of Sierra Calderona. We will not go to Garbi itself, as it is too crowded on the weekends, but go to Puntal de Albarda, which offers the same views, and nobody knows about it.
We’ll meet in Valencia in the parking lot on av. Aragón in front of Mestalla stadium and drive to Estivella. Once there, we’ll have a cup of coffee on a terrace of a bar before starting the hike. The route starts from Beselga. First we’ll visit the ruins of its castle and then make our way up through the lush vegetation. This part of Sierra Calderona is quite humid, and usually stays in shade, which helps all kinds of plants flourish and create a very distinct scenery. We’ll stop at Barraix shrine on our way, which also has a natural spring nearby. Just a couple of kilometers more and we’ll arrive at Puntal de Albarda lookout point. We can stop here to have lunch and appreciate the views. A quick descent on another trail and we’re back in Beselga. From here we’ll drive back to Estivella, stop for a drink on a terrace and return to Valencia.

Beselga Castle

The Castle of Beselga, declared a Site of Cultural Interest, is located in the area of the same name, on the north slope of Mount Garbí. The Christian castle-palace, which is located next to the tower, dates from the late 15th century and was built during the time of the government of Baron Gracià de Monsoriu. Its rectangular plan consisted of two floors and an upper roof. The main entrance was located on the north facade. On the top floor it had two large windows, one of them above the door, twin and Gothic in style. The first floor was supported by semicircular vaults. The second floor would be composed of a beam. Its characteristics, therefore, are more related to those of a palace or stately home than to those of a defensive castle….. Estivella.es
