Astronomical Observatory

The Astronomical Observatory organizes visits to its observation station in Aras de los Olmos. This observation station is located in the Alto Turia region, one of the few remaining dark sky reserves in the Valencian Community. A visit to the Aras de los Olmos Observatory is a unique experience of contemplation and enjoyment of the dark sky, one of the elements of nature that is increasingly difficult to find. In it we can discover the grandeur of the Milky Way, the brilliance of thousands of stars visible to the naked eye, the layout of the constellations and their ties to history and culture.

The visit begins with a brief presentation of the activities of the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Valencia, and a tour of the telescopic facilities. After nightfall, a guided tour of the sky with the naked eye takes place, where the constellations and how to identify them are described, orientation techniques at night based on the stars are exposed, and mythological figures and the classic legends associated with the groups of constellations and their movement in the sky. After that, the observation session begins in one of the telescopes, which includes the visible planets, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies.

Senda de las Estrellas

Starting from Aras, this route starts from the town of Aras itself to cover the various paths that make this a unique landscape. It will show us the terrain where the space observatory is located and get us familiarized with the area before we drive there in the evening for the stargazing session.

This route runs along Muela de Santa Catalina, going up its slope until we reach the Iberian site. Along the way you can enjoy interpretation tables, informing about the history and culture of this town. From here we will continue hiking on the top of the Muela de Santa Catalina where the astronomical observatory is located. The path ends by crossing the forest track to the Hermitage of Santa Catalina and from here, following the Acequia de la Santa, it returns to the beginning in Aras de los Olmos.

The Three Kingdoms Route

The area around Aras de los Olmos has a spot where you can get on the border between the three kingdoms, as Aragón, Castilla la Mancha and Valencian Community come together here. On this day we are going to hike along one of the most spectacular canyons in Valencia. The route is a combination of several marked trails. First, we’ll take the GR-37 path out of Losilla and start heading down. Soon, great views of the canyon will open down, as we descend to the Arcos river. By this point we will already be in Aragón, since the trail crosses the border. After a short ascent we will get to the area with several viewpoints which will allow us to contemplate the views of the canyon. We will also stop for lunch here. The return to Losilla will be made along the wide paths of PR-CV 130 trail.
