26th of December
A hike to one of the most imposing castles of Sierra Espadán – castillo de Maús in Sueras. We’ll get to walk on some of the most magical trails of the natural park and get up to the castle towards the end.
We’ll meet in Valencia in the parking lot on av. Aragón in front of Mestalla stadium and drive to Sueras. Once there, we’ll have a cup of coffee on a terrace of a bar before starting the hike. The first part of the hike goes along the undulating trails on a side of a hill. The vegetation is quite dense here, which makes the ambiance quite magical. At the same time, there are frequent openings, giving you the views of the castle on the other side of the valley. Next, we’ll cross a small creek, pass by a natural spring and start our ascent. Once we get to the castle, we will stop for lunch. From here, a short trail going down the hill will take us back to the village. We’ll have a drink on a terrace and return to Valencia.
The Maús Castle
The Castle is of Arab origin, built in the 12th century. It is located on the top of the Suera Alta hill at an elevation of 582 meters above sea level. It is in ruins, but its abruptly cut silhouette is one of the most striking of the whole area of the Sierra de Espadán. Large canvases of walls and the lower part of what must have been the largest tower can still be seen. It is associated with four Muslim farmsteads to which it gave protection and which, after the conquest, were grouped into a single urban nucleus, the current Sueras.
Suera Castle receives this name from its current location, but in Islamic times it was known as Castillo de Mauz.
