La Estrella

Although technically la Estrella is in Mosqueruela, municipality of Teruel, where they call it “La Villeta”; it is closely linked to Vistabella del Maestrazgo, since it is a spiritual part of the sacred mountain of the Valencians – Peñagolosa. La Estrella and San Juan de Peñagolosa can be joined by an imaginary line that crosses the Vistabella Plan. The origins of la Estrella date back to the 14th century and are related to the Mallo Castle: after its dismantling, a small village was populated on the left bank of the Montlleó River. The purpose of the town seems to be the cultivation of vineyards.

Montleón River

The Monleon river, which separates the kingdoms of Aragon and Valencia at the Estrella hermitage, runs quite deep through the eastern part of the plain… Although La Estrella belongs to Mosqueruela, where it is called La Villeta, the sanctuary is closely linked spiritually to Vistabella, along with the hermitage of San Juan de Peñagolosa, on the sacred mountain. A winding, narrow and vertiginous forest track leads to this magical and unique town located on a rocky slope next to the left bank of the Monleón River whose course crosses a Roman bridge that seems to have been part of the old road that connected Tarraco with Mérida.

La Penyagolosa

Penyagolosa Natural Park is dominated by the peak that gives it its name, which with its 1,814 m is considered the top of the Valencian Community par excellence and a benchmark in Valencian mountaineering. Its summits, hills and even cliffs are the habitat of numerous species of flora and fauna that confer an extraordinary richness and biodiversity to these lands. The magical and sacred nature of the great mountain is evident in the Hermitage of Sant Joan de Penyagolosa, a pilgrimage center for the surrounding towns. This natural environment has been inhabited by man since ancient times, leaving remains in caves and petroglyphs of ancient cultures, as well as abundant farmhouses, testimony to an architecture and a way of life adapted to the environment.
