Selva de Irati

Selva de Irati is a vast, well-preserved forest located in the Pyrenees, spanning parts of Navarre in Spain and areas of southwestern France. Covering more than 17,000 hectares, it’s one of the largest and best-preserved mixed beech-fir forests in Europe, second only to Germany’s Black Forest. The forest is a significant natural treasure, home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including beech and silver fir trees, as well as roe deer, wild boar, and various species of woodpeckers. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing, with access points in the valleys of Aezkoa and Salazar. The Selva de Irati’s landscape is especially known for its stunning transformation during autumn when the leaves turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow.

Embalse de Irabia

The Irabia Reservoir Loop, or “Vuelta al Embalse de Irabia,” is one of the most popular and accessible hikes in the Selva de Irati. This circular trail is celebrated for its stunning beauty and ease, making it a perfect option for families, casual hikers, and nature lovers of all ages. The path, which is mostly flat and well-maintained, follows the perimeter of the picturesque Irabia Reservoir, offering continuous, breathtaking views of the water and the surrounding dense beech and fir forests. The tranquil waters often act as a mirror, creating spectacular reflections of the trees, especially during autumn when the foliage is a brilliant mix of reds and golds. The trail is an excellent way to experience the serene beauty of the Irati Forest at a relaxed pace.

Bosque de Zabaleta

The Zabaleta Wood Trail is a classic and popular hiking route within the Selva de Irati, a majestic beech and silver fir forest in the Spanish Pyrenees. This trail is particularly celebrated for its ability to fully immerse hikers in the dense, tranquil forest environment. The route is considered a great option for those who wish to experience the heart of the forest without an overly strenuous climb. It is well-marked and provides a deep sense of peace, surrounded by towering, centuries-old trees. The trail’s name, “Zabaleta,” refers to a nearby historical logging house, adding a touch of cultural history to the natural beauty of the walk.

Arlekia – Lauzaran

The Arlekia – Lauzaran trail (SLNA – 59B) is a scenic and historically rich circular route in the Selva de Irati, starting and ending near the impressive ruins of the Orbaizeta Arms Factory. This moderately challenging hike, which typically takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete, offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. The trail leads hikers through a lush beech forest, with a short, steep detour to the ruins of the Arlekia Castle, which provides panoramic views of the valley. The route also takes you to the Lauzaran pass and crosses the Itolatz stream, offering a diverse experience that showcases both the dense, tranquil forest and the dramatic, open landscapes of the region.
