Penyagolosa’s allure is undeniable, serving as a symbol of the region’s natural beauty and grandeur. Visible from vast stretches of Castellón province’s coastline, it captivates the imagination and draws explorers from far and wide. For those seeking an unforgettable experience, the journey begins in the quaint village of Vistabella del Maestrazgo, just a two-hour drive from Valencia.

Arriving in Vistabella, a quick stop for a rejuvenating coffee sets the tone for the adventure ahead. From there, a brief 10-minute additional drive transports us to the trailhead at Sant Joan de Penyagolosa monastery, where our hike commences. Opting for the less-traveled Barranc Oscur trail, we’re treated to a tranquil ambiance and captivating scenery as we delve deeper into the wilderness.

As we hike through lush pine forests, the anticipation builds with each step towards the summit. Approximately 1.5 hours into our hike, we transition to the traditional path leading to Penyagolosa’s peak. And what awaits us at the summit is nothing short of awe-inspiring – panoramic views stretching for miles in every direction. On clear days, the vista extends to five different provinces, offering a glimpse of Castellón, Valencia, Alicante, Teruel, and even Tarragona.

But the adventure doesn’t end at the summit. With two adjacent summits to explore, we’re treated to a leisurely stroll between them, soaking in the breathtaking surroundings. As we begin our descent, retracing our steps along familiar paths, the landscape transforms once again. From rocky terrain to verdant forests, the transition through Barranco de la Pegunta is a testament to the diversity of Penyagolosa’s ecosystem.
